Buying Figures from Japan: Retail Boxes, Shipping Cartons and Arrival Checks

Does box included mean a separate shipping carton? Understand retail boxes, folded packaging, protective materials and arrival checks before buying collectible figures from Japan.

You have found a figure you want, and its description says “box included.” Does that tell you whether a delivery label will go directly on the retail box, or whether the seller will use a separate shipping carton?

If you collect the packaging as well as the figure, check how the box will arrive alongside the condition of the item itself. This guide covers questions to ask before buying through Japanese shops or marketplaces, followed by useful checks when the parcel arrives.

Separate the retail box from the shipping carton

Here, “retail box” means the original sales packaging carrying the product name or character artwork. “Shipping carton” means the outer cardboard box used for transport. A listing's reference to an “outer box” may mean either, so avoid deciding from that term alone.

Whether the retail box is included and whether a shipping carton will be used are separate questions. If the listing only says “box included,” ask whether the original box will be placed inside another cardboard box for shipping. Our art-toy condition guide also explains how to examine packaging and accessories.

What to checkWhat you want to knowExample question
Retail boxWhether it is included, kept assembled or folded flatCan you ship the retail box without folding it?
Shipping cartonWhether a separate outer carton will be usedWill the delivery label be attached to a separate shipping box?
Protection insideHow the figure and retail box will be protectedHow will you protect both the figure and its box?

These questions communicate your preferences; they do not mean a seller can necessarily accommodate them. Agree before purchasing if a different method or shipping charge is involved.

Decide whether a folded box fits how you collect

When a seller folds the retail box and includes it with the item, you will not receive it in the same assembled form. Someone who displays the boxes, someone who stores the printed packaging and someone who keeps only the figure may all want different things.

Do not assume “with box” automatically meets your preference. If folds or damage around the opening matter to you, request photographs of those areas and check the shipping method before buying. If you want the box left assembled, get agreement first instead of purchasing on the assumption that the seller will change the method afterwards.

Consider where cushioning goes, not only whether it is included

Mercari Shops' packaging guidance describes protecting the accompanying retail box as well as the figure, and using cushioning at the bottom and in gaps around the contents of the shipping carton. For a buyer, an explanation of how the contents will be kept from moving around is more useful than the material's name alone. See the Mercari Shops figure-packing guide.

If you want to keep the retail box, ask which box will receive the label and adhesive tape. If the figure has thin parts, ask how other objects will be kept from pressing against them. More packing material by itself cannot guarantee an undamaged arrival; look for an approach suited to the item's shape and shipping method.

Check the parcel before clearing away its packaging

Keep the packaging while you check the contents. The following sequence is our editorial suggestion for recording what arrived:

  1. Look at the shipping carton before opening it. If there is a noticeable dent or tear, photograph both the whole box and the affected area.
  2. After opening, photograph how the retail box and cushioning were arranged inside.
  3. Compare the figure, box and accessories with the description. Record any concerns with an overall photograph and a closer view.

Hide addresses and personal information on delivery labels before sharing photographs publicly. Keep the originals so you can provide them to the transaction's support channel if needed. If there is a problem, check the purchase platform's instructions before making repairs yourself or discarding the packaging.

For standard Mercari transactions, the official help page tells buyers not to submit the receipt rating when an item has a problem, and to contact the seller about its condition. Mercari Shops and other online stores have their own procedures, so use the instructions for the place where you bought the item. See Mercari's guidance for an item that differs from its description or arrives damaged.

For overseas purchases, check each part of the journey

If you use a proxy-buying service, distinguish the destination covered by the seller's shipping from the country where you will ultimately receive the parcel. Ask the service whether it repacks items, keeps retail boxes, offers additional protective packing and handles damage enquiries. Confirm these points before buying.

These are questions for evaluating a service, not a statement that every country and product is supported. The actual service and item conditions determine shipping availability and charges.

Our personal Mercari listings and Loop KOBE shop each provide conditions for individual products. Linking both storefronts does not mean they offer identical packaging or direct international shipping.
