On Mercari Japan you can pay by credit card or Merpay balance, and you can also pay at a convenience store or an ATM. With this last option, however, the item is not paid for when you press the purchase button. Based on Mercari's official help centre, this guide covers the deadline, the fees, changing the payment method and what happens if the deadline passes.
The deadline: the third day, counting the purchase day
According to Mercari's help centre, the deadline for convenience store or ATM payment is 23:59:59 on the third day, counting the purchase day. For example, if you buy on 5 October, the deadline is 23:59:59 on 7 October. Note that the purchase day counts as day one.
If you buy before you know when you can get to a store or ATM, the deadline can come up sooner than expected. Before buying, think about whether you can pay within three days. If it looks difficult, consider changing the payment method early, as explained below, and when buying from a personal seller, let them know through the transaction messages to avoid misunderstandings.
Payment fees by amount
Convenience store and ATM payments (and carrier billing) carry a payment fee on top of the item price. Mercari's help page on fees lists the following amounts.
| Payment amount | Payment fee |
|---|---|
| Up to ¥5,000 | ¥100 |
| ¥5,001 to ¥10,000 | ¥200 |
| ¥10,001 to ¥20,000 | ¥300 |
| ¥20,001 to ¥30,000 | ¥500 |
| ¥30,001 to ¥40,000 | ¥700 |
| ¥40,001 and over | ¥880 |
For example, buying a ¥3,000 item with convenience store payment means paying ¥3,100 including the ¥100 fee. The same help page lists credit card, Merpay balance, Apple Pay, FamiPay and Merpay credit or fixed-amount payment as fee-free methods. Fees can change, so also check the total on the purchase screen.
Changing the payment method
According to the help centre, you can change the method from the transaction screen using "change payment method" or "reissue customer number". The change is limited, for example from one convenience store to another or to a bank ATM; switching from bank ATM to a convenience store is not possible.
If the deadline passes: personal sellers vs Mercari Shops
| Mercari (personal sellers) | Mercari Shops | |
|---|---|---|
| Deadline | 23:59:59 on the third day, counting the purchase day | 23:59 on the third day, counting the purchase day |
| After the deadline | Payment is still possible, but the seller may cancel | The order is cancelled automatically, in turn from 00:00 on day 5 |
When buying from a personal seller, the help centre says you can still pay after the deadline, but if payment is not confirmed the seller can request a cancellation without the buyer's agreement. Mercari also treats not paying by the deadline as a nuisance behaviour and says it may issue warnings or restrict accounts.
On Mercari Shops, the help centre says an order is cancelled automatically if it is not paid by the deadline, with cancellations made in turn from 00:00 on the fifth day, counting the purchase day as day one. If you want to buy again, the item may already be gone.
After you pay
According to the help centre, once payment is complete you wait for the item to be shipped, rate the transaction when it arrives, and the deal is complete after the seller rates you. You can see the expected dispatch time under "days to ship" on the item page. See dispatch time vs delivery on Mercari and checking your item before rating.
Checklist before you buy
- Can you get to a convenience store or ATM within three days?
- What is the total including the fee?
- Could you use a fee-free method instead?
- Is the seller a personal seller or a Mercari Shops shop? The rules after the deadline differ
- Because you pay at a store or ATM in Japan, can you actually use this method if you are overseas?
Our two shops, our personal Mercari listings and Loop KOBE on Mercari Shops, follow Mercari's standard rules. For the exact payment and shipping conditions, please check each item page and the latest version of Mercari's help centre.
