Mercari Japan: Drop-off Delivery or Mailbox Delivery?
Understand designated drop-off, mailbox delivery and Eco Mercari shipping before buying collectibles in Japan, including what an unspecified shipping method does not tell you.

A small collectible does not automatically arrive in a mailbox, and choosing drop-off does not mean choosing mailbox delivery. Okihai refers to delivery at a designated location; post delivery refers to the mailbox. Check the shipping service used for the order rather than deciding from the size of the collectible alone.
Start with the shipping service

Mercari distinguishes mailbox services, including Nekopos and the Yu-Packet, Yu-Packet Post and Yu-Packet Post mini services, from eligible parcel drop-off services. This guide concerns Mercari shipping in personal marketplace transactions. It should not be applied automatically to every Mercari Shops listing.
A pin badge may be thin, but protective backing or a box changes the finished parcel. A photograph of a boxed plush also does not identify its shipping service. The useful question is not simply “Is the item small?” but “Which delivery method will this order use?”
Check the delivery setting at checkout
Review the drop-off choice in the buyer’s checkout settings, including when you do not want to use it. A saved preference alone is not a guarantee: the service the seller actually uses must support that delivery arrangement.
If the retail box matters to your collection, consider rain exposure, room for the parcel and the building’s receiving rules when choosing a location. If you expect a parcel to remain there for a long time, discuss a suitable receiving arrangement before ordering.
A concrete question is easier to answer than a general request: “Can this order use a service that delivers to my parcel locker?” Treat the reply as information about this item and service. It does not establish the receiving options for another seller or another order.
Eco Mercari and an unspecified shipping method
Eco Mercari is a drop-off service. Availability depends on the receiving preference, service area, listing settings and the seller’s shipping selection. Buying an item through Mercari does not, by itself, make the order eligible.
For a concrete example, our HIRONO listing showed its shipping method as unspecified when checked on September 25, 2026. Mentions of tracking or anonymous delivery in the description do not identify a particular drop-off service. If one receiving method is essential, clarify it before buying.
For overseas buyers, distinguish the Japan delivery leg
If you use a proxy or forwarding service, ask how its Japan receiving address accepts parcels. A Japanese drop-off setting does not guarantee the same arrangement at your overseas home. Our proxy buying and forwarding comparison explains the separate purchasing routes.
