Paying on Mercari Shops: Which Payment Methods Work, Which Don't, the All-or-Nothing Points Rule and the Convenience Store/ATM Deadline

Mercari Shops items do not accept quite the same payment methods as regular Mercari listings. Based on Mercari's official help, this guide explains which methods work and which do not on Shops, why points and Merpay balance cannot be used partially, how sales proceeds work, the convenience store/ATM deadline and auto-cancellation, and which orders cannot be partly cancelled.

When the seller of a Mercari item is a Mercari Shops store rather than an individual, the payment methods you can use differ in part from regular listings. You may only notice at checkout that your usual method is not available, so this guide uses Mercari's official help page on payment methods for Mercari Shops to set out, from the buyer's side, what works, what does not, and what to watch out for.

First, check whether it is a Shops item

If the seller section of the item page says Mercari Shops, it is a shop item. For the wider differences between individual listings and Shops (questions, price requests, shipping, cancellations and receipts), see our previous guide, Mercari Shops vs individual sellers.

Payment methods that work on Shops

The help page lists the following nine payment methods for Mercari Shops. Note that credit cards are listed as single (lump-sum) payment only.

  • Mercari points
  • Merpay balance
  • Credit card (single payment only)
  • Merpay credit
  • Mercard
  • Convenience store / ATM payment
  • au Kantan Kessai (au / UQ mobile carrier billing)
  • d Barai (docomo)
  • SoftBank Matomete Shiharai (carrier billing)

Methods you cannot use on Shops

On the other hand, the help page says the following cannot be used on Mercari Shops. If you normally pay this way, have another method ready before buying a Shops item.

Not availableWhat it means for buyers
d POINT paymentYou cannot pay with d POINT (d Barai itself is available)
Charge payment (チャージ払い)Not selectable, so choose another method
BitcoinBitcoin payment is not available

Points and balance are all-or-nothing

The help page says that on Mercari Shops, Mercari points and Merpay balance are applied in full: you cannot use only part of what you have. So you cannot, for example, use a few points and put the rest on a credit card; check the payment breakdown on the checkout screen with that in mind.

You also cannot buy items directly with your sales proceeds: you first buy points with the proceeds and then pay with those points. Points cannot be bought on the checkout screen, so this has to be done in advance. The help page adds that if you have completed in-app identity verification or registered a payment bank account, you can shop directly with your Merpay balance.

Convenience store/ATM: deadline and auto-cancellation

Convenience store/ATM payment is made after you place the order, so payment is not complete at the moment of purchase. On Mercari Shops, the deadline is 23:59 on the third day counting the purchase date; if you have not paid by then, the order is cancelled automatically from 0:00 on the fifth day onwards, and any coupon you used is returned.

Because the shop prepares shipment once payment is confirmed, paying early means your order ships sooner. Fees vary by payment method, so check them on the checkout screen. For convenience store/ATM payment on regular Mercari listings, see our guide to Mercari convenience store/ATM payment.

Orders that cannot be partly cancelled

On Mercari Shops, part of an order can sometimes be cancelled by agreement with the shop, but the help page says the following orders cannot be partly cancelled; any cancellation applies to the whole order. Keep this in mind when choosing how to pay for several items at once.

  • Orders awaiting convenience store/ATM payment
  • Orders paid by carrier billing (au Kantan Kessai, d Barai, SoftBank Matomete Shiharai)
  • Orders using a coupon issued by Mercari
  • Orders where a shop coupon applies to only some of the units purchased

Checklist before you pay

  • Does the seller section say Mercari Shops?
  • Is the method you want available on Shops? (d POINT, charge payment and bitcoin are not.)
  • Do you understand that points and balance are applied in full?
  • If using sales proceeds, have you bought points in advance?
  • If paying at a convenience store/ATM, can you pay by 23:59 on the third day including the purchase date?
  • If using a coupon, the order may not be partly cancellable later

Help pages can change, so always confirm on the checkout screen and in the latest official help. At Loop KOBE, the Mercari Shops store run by Koetsu, payment also goes through Mercari's checkout. We do not ship directly overseas.
