Solo Yakitori in Osaka: Counter Seats and Useful Japanese Phrases
Plan a solo yakitori dinner around Honmachi and Minamikyuhoji with phrases for asking about a counter seat, luggage space and ordering portions.

For a solo yakitori dinner in Osaka, start with two questions: can the restaurant seat one person now, and which seat is available? A counter is a useful feature to look for when choosing a restaurant, but its existence does not establish availability. Tell the staff you are dining alone and wait to be shown to a seat.
Start with “Hitori desu”
Without a reservation, say “一人です。今、入れますか” (hitori desu. Ima, hairemasu ka?): “I am on my own. Is there a seat available now?” It combines the party size and your wish to eat now. If you have made a reservation, give the booking name as well as the number of people.
An apparently empty chair may be reserved or not yet ready. Ask before sitting down. If the seat you wanted is unavailable, discuss another seat or the likely wait, then decide whether it fits your evening. An empty-looking counter in a photograph is not a reliable guide to availability on the day.
Ask for the seat you prefer
To request a counter seat, ask “カウンター席は空いていますか” (kauntaa-seki wa aite imasu ka?): “Is there a counter seat available?” Dining alone does not automatically mean you must sit at the counter. If you would be more comfortable at a table, mention that preference and ask what can be arranged.

If you have shopping bags or a suitcase, ask about storage before settling in. Do not assume the neighbouring chair or aisle can be used for luggage. The useful question is where your particular bag can go; a restaurant having counter seats does not also promise a luggage-storage service.
Build the meal around the order units
Check whether the printed price covers one skewer or a set before deciding how much to order. Use the phrase in the table if the unit is unclear. Minimum quantities can vary by dish, so treat the question as a request for clarification rather than an instruction to split a fixed serving.

When you have another commitment, tell the staff your intended departure time and ask whether the visit is practical. Stating a time does not guarantee every dish can be served by then. Leaving some flexibility makes both the meal and the journey afterwards easier to manage.
