Ordering Shochu with Yakitori: Rocks, Mizuwari and Oyuwari
Learn how to order shochu at a yakitori restaurant in Osaka, with simple Japanese phrases for ice, cold water and hot water, plus questions to ask before ordering.

After choosing shochu from a yakitori menu, you may be asked how you would like it served. This is a question about ice or water, separate from the bottle you picked. Three useful terms are rokku, mizuwari and oyuwari. Knowing them makes it easier to put together a clear order.
Choose the shochu and the serving style separately
Shochu is a Japanese distilled spirit. A menu may organize it by ingredients such as sweet potato, barley or rice, or by brand. “On the rocks” is a serving method, not a brand. Point to the listed drink, then add your preferred method so both parts of the order are clear.
If you cannot read the brand name, point and say “Kochira o ippai onegaishimasu” — one glass of this, please — then discuss the serving style. You do not need a detailed description of regions or aromas. Deciding whether you want a cold or warm drink gives the conversation a useful starting point.
What the three terms mean

JETRO’s shochu guide describes all three methods. Mizuwari and oyuwari distinguish cold water from hot water. If you want oyuwari, name or point to the shochu as well; asking only for “warm alcohol” leaves the type of drink unclear.
These words do not specify a glass size or an exact water ratio. Discuss any particular preference when ordering. A picture of a drink is not a promise that every restaurant uses the same measure, vessel or preparation.
Short questions when you are unsure
When the menu does not list serving options, ask “Kore wa oyuwari ni dekimasu ka?” — can this be served with hot water? You can show the Japanese sentence これはお湯割りにできますか on your phone. Checking before settling on the drink can avoid a change after the order has been placed.
For a suggestion, try “Yakitori to issho ni nomitai desu. Osusume wa arimasu ka?” — I would like a drink with yakitori; do you have a recommendation? Mention the skewer or seasoning you are ordering. Preferences differ, so there is no need to impose one bottle on every salt-seasoned or sauce-seasoned skewer.
